Walker Lake, a terminal saline lake located in Mineral County, Nevada, is a remnant of ancient Lake Lahontan. Its surface area currently around 128,000 acres has significantly decreased over the past century due to upstream water diversion. Once reaching a maximum depth of over 500 feet, the lake's depth was 86 feet and is likely shallower now. While historically known for its unique fishery, including the Lahontan cutthroat trout, the declining water levels and increasing salinity have severely impacted the native fish populations. Efforts are underway to restore the lake's ecosystem.
