Barber had acted that summer as Brigade Major to Gen. Thomas Conway but was replaced the day before the battle. He is depicted here in a blue and buff uniform and green sash worn as Brigade Major. Both Barber and Bell were New Yorkers of Irish descent, serving in an at-large Continental regiment, one of the so-called “16 Additional” battalions authorized by Congress at the end of 1776.
